Why do clubs have sister clubs in Belgium?
The owners of famous English clubs like Manchester City, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Leicester City have bought majority shares in Belgian clubs Lommel SK, Union SG, and OH Leuven, respectively. But why? In recent years, Belgium has emerged as a football powerhouse and developed several world-class players. However, beyond the obvious reasons, like creating a scouting network and player development pathway, having a sister club in Belgium solves one major problem. The clubs find it very difficult to acquire uncovered talents from non-European countries due to stringent visa regulations in the UK. On the other hand, Belgium is known for its seamless and quick immigration and visa processes. The country also allows dual citizenship. The players can acquire Belgian passports and access the valuable EU player quota, which makes their transfer to the parent club a lot easier. Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma was signed from Kawasaki Frontale on a four-year contract, but the Japanese spent his first year on loan at Union SG.
