Why Arsenal are called the Gunners?
The answer lies in their historical ties with the Royal Arsenal, a munitions factory in Woolwich, South London, where the club originated in 1886. The workers at the Royal Arsenal, who formed the club, were skilled craftsmen involved in manufacturing weaponry, including cannons and other artillery.
The club's founders, seeking a name that reflected their roots, decided on "Royal Arsenal" initially. However, in 1893, when the club moved to North London, dropping "Royal" from its name, they retained the association with weaponry and munitions by adopting the nickname "Gunners."
This nickname not only pays homage to the club's industrial and historical origins but also reflects qualities like precision, strength, and determination, alluding to the characteristics of skilled artillery workers. The iconic cannon in Arsenal's emblem further symbolizes this historical connection and has become a central part of the club's identity over the years.
