What happened to Mason Greenwood?

From Manchester United prodigy to controversy and legal issues, read about Mason Greenwood, who is now catching the attention of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

When Mason Greenwood broke into the Manchester United first team as a 17-year-old in 2019, he was largely considered one of the finest talents to come out of the club’s academy. In Greenwood, United had a budding striker, efficient with both feet and who could dribble as well as hold the ball up.

However, in January 2022, he was arrested on charges of attempted rape and assault. United suspended him, and while the charges against him were dropped in February 2023, understandably, there was plenty of resistance to get him back into the squad.

After going back and forth in making their decision, the club eventually loaned him out to Getafe on deadline day in 2023. In Spain, however, the 22-year-old looks hellbent on making up for lost times on the pitch, registering 5 goals and 4 assists in his first 15 appearances.

While Greenwood’s Manchester United contract runs until June 2025, his exploits in Spain are earning him high praise again, so much so that there have been whispers of Barcelona and Real Madrid monitoring his performances closely.
