Here is the story of Vikash Dhorasoo, the most successful Indian-origin footballer who represented France at the FIFA World Cup 2006 alongside Zinedine Zidane.
Vikash Dhorasoo, the French footballer of Indian origin, transcends the typical narrative of a sports figure.
Born in 1973 in Le Havre, Vikash started his playing career at Le Havre FC. He then moved to Lyon, where he won two Ligue 1 titles.
In 2004, Vikash signed for AC Milan, and after a year of playing in Italy, he returned to France, this time signing for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
He even made 18 appearances for France, including two in the 2006 World Cup. In fact, the same year, he even released a documentary called ‘Substitute’, where he recorded his thoughts and moments before and during the World Cup.
But perhaps his work and career off the pitch is even more interesting. He stood as a candidate for Mayor of Paris in 2020, and among his other activism ventures, he is an ardent supporter of Paris Foot Gay, a football club which combats homophobia.
