The Lights of Allianz Arena
The beautiful lights of Bayern Munich’s home, the Allianz Arena, were actually a solution to a practical problem. Before shifting to their new home in 2005, Bayern used to play their home games at the Olympiastadion, which they also shared with TSV 1860 Munich. While planning, it was decided that the new stadium would be used by both clubs, which raised a unique challenge. How do you build a stadium with two different colour themes? To overcome this, the architects came up with an innovative solution. They covered the entire structure with inflated ETFE plastic panels, which could change colours, turning the stadium into a vibrant display of red and white for Bayern Munich matches, blue and white for TSV 1860 Munich, and even other colours for special events. However, facing bankruptcy in 2006, 1860 had to sell their 50% share to their rivals. Bayern eventually terminated 1860's rental agreement, taking complete ownership of the stadium in 2017.
