Rafael Nadal - RCD Mallorca Connection

From club legend uncle to becoming owner to save the football club, Rafael Nadal's connection with RCD Mallorca transcends mere hometown ties.

Here's why tennis superstar Rafael Nadal will be cheering for RCD Mallorca at the Copa del Rey Finals. Born in Mallorca, Rafael has been following the club since his childhood. He also used to play football before switching to tennis.

Interestingly, his parental uncle, Miguel Ángel Nadal, is an RCD Mallorca legend with 255 appearances, the highest number for Mallorca by any player to date. When the club hit a rough patch in 2010, facing debts as high as €85 million, the then-world number 1 tennis player and his uncle saved the club by investing in it for 10% ownership, which they sold the next year. Despite being a Real Madrid fan, Nadal keeps a tab on his local club and never misses a chance to watch them play.

The last time RCD Mallorca was in the Copa del Rey Finals was in 2003 when Nadal's uncle was the captain, and it was the only time the club won the trophy. This season, Athletic Club stands in their way. Will Mallorca lift the coveted trophy once again? Well, Nadal sure hopes so!
