Loophole in I League to ISL promotion!
According to the proposed roadmap for Indian Football, the I-League Champions will soon start getting promoted to the Indian Super League without paying any participation fees. However, the promoted clubs will not be entitled to any share in the ISL central revenue pool, which is the only major source of income for ISL teams. Currently, ISL teams receive almost ₹13 crores from the league every season, which will only increase with time. The lack of income from the ISL can leave the promoted I-League clubs seriously disadvantaged.
What adds to the misery of teams stepping up the ladder are added expenses to meet the ISL standards, like developing infrastructure to host matches. Bengaluru FC’s expenses doubled when the club made the jump from the I-League to the ISL in 2017.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how a promoted I-League club competes against established corporate-backed ISL franchisees without any income from the league and with added expenditures.
