Leicester City Transfer Strategy

Leicester City transfer strategy

Leicester City Football Club has been applying a planned transfer strategy since winning the Premier League in 2016. Except for the 2021–22 COVID-impacted season, the Foxes sold only one key player every year. This allowed the club to maintain a competitive squad while keeping its transfer budget in check. It started when N’Golo Kante was sold to Chelsea in 2016. Danny Drinkwater, Riyad Mahrez, Harry Maguire, and Ben Chilwell also left the club in the following seasons.

This season, however, the departure of Wesley Fofana and club captain Kasper Schmeichel was not on the cards. Transfer deadline day panic signing Wout Faes and stand-by goalkeeper Danny Ward failed to fill their boots. Long-term injuries to Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira, and James Justin worsened the situation, pushing the Foxes into the relegation scrap.

Nevertheless, Leicester’s net transfer spend over the last seven seasons stands at £115 million, averaging just over £16 million per year, which is peanuts at the Premier League level.
