How Tottenham's Heung-min Son Escaped Military Service

In South Korea, all able-bodied men need to complete a mandatory 21-month military service before the age of 28. Here's how Tottenham's Heung-min Son escaped it.

Heung-min Son would have had to serve in the military if he hadn't won gold at the Asian Games. A law in South Korea states that all able-bodied men need to complete a mandatory 21-month military service before the age of 28. And this rule is the same for all, whether celebrities or commoners. In fact, all the members of the popular boy band BTS are currently serving in the military. But Tottenham's Heung-min Son is an exception.

In 2018, South Korea won gold at the Asian Games. As a reward for his stellar performance, Son was exempted from serving in the military for 21 months. Instead, he had to undertake a basic 3-week training course. Son completed his course with the Marine Corps on Jeju Island in 2020. He finished at the top out of 157 fellow trainees and was one of five individuals to receive an award at the graduation ceremony. Nice one, Sonny!
