Here's what happened when Deadpool took over a Football Club

Read how Deadpool superstar Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have taken the club from non-league to League One since acquiring Wrexham AFC in 2020.

Wrexham AFC, the oldest football club in Wales, had been relegated from England's 4th division in 2008 after 87 years, and things were looking bleak for the club. But parallelly, there was another story brewing that would change Wrexham's fortunes again.

Comedian Rob McElhenney was a good friend of Humphrey Ker, a British writer and Wrexham's executive director. Ker introduced Rob to football while they were working on a show together. McElhenney fell in love with the game, so much so that he wanted to buy a football club! On the lookout for a marketable personality to buy the club with, Rob reached out to Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds, whom he'd never met. Best known for Deadpool, Reynolds was on board with the idea immediately, and the two bought the club for around £2 million in 2020.

With Deadpool as the owner, the club signed former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster and even released a documentary, Welcome to Wrexham. On the sporting front, they secured promotion to League Two again in 2023. The club continued their form in their first season in League Two and secured automatic promotion to League One the next year.
