Gerard Pique’s Kings League

The Final Tour of Gerard Pique’s Kings League drew in 92,000 fans to the Camp Nou in March, with over 2 million watching on TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch. But what exactly is the Kings League?
The germ of the idea of a 7-a-side modern-day and futuristic football format was born in mid-2022 when Pique met Oriol Querol, now the league’s technical director, and Ibai Llanos, a Spanish social media star.
In January 2023, the league began. It is essentially football, with some changes in the set of rules to pack in more entertainment. For instance, instead of a traditional kick-off, the two teams run to the centre of the pitch to gain possession; matches last for 40 minutes, with 20 minutes per half; and so on.
The first season consisted of 12 teams, each having a popular face as their president, including former footballers such as Iker Casillas and Sergio Aguero. Most teams have social media stars and streamers as presidents, and their huge following means people around the world can watch the matches for free as they are streamed online.
