Are football clubs really sustainable?

Six-time French champion Bordeaux recently filed for bankruptcy. This incident has raised several questions, including: Are football clubs really sustainable?

Six-time French champion Bordeaux recently decided to give up their professional status and filed for bankruptcy. The club, once represented by players like Zinedine Zidane, will terminate player contracts and shut down their training centre. The news came after the team was relegated to the third tier of French football as a punishment for their financial troubles. Bordeaux failed to acquire the $43.6 million they needed to balance their books. The club was relying on a takeover from Liverpool owners FSG Group, but the deal collapsed at the last moment.

Bordeaux's troubles started with COVID-19. The club went into administration in 2021 and was relegated from Ligue 1 next year. While the club is expected to be back after the necessary restructuring, probably registering under a different company name and owners, this incident has raised several questions. If a club of Bordeaux's calibre cannot survive in a football-developed country like France, just imagine how vulnerable football clubs around the world are.
